Calumet runner takes third in 100K at Marquette Trail 50 Ultramarathon

MARQUETTE – On a hot, humid day, 197 runners came to push their bodies to the limit Saturday at the Marquette Trail 50 Ultramarathon, and an Upper Peninsula woman put forth a strong performance.

A new race was added this season, a 100K, and Calumet’s Bridget Durocher took third place in the women’s division with a a time of 15:56:39.7. The race started at 12:30 a.m. and is the equivalent of about 62.1 miles.

Tina Johnson of Greenfield, Wis. took the women’s title at 14:53:39.3, while Katherine Strong of Anchorage, Alaska finished second (15:08:08.9).

Jeffrey Devries of Grand Rapids was the men’s champion and he finished with a time of 13:34:43.9. Devries finished well ahead of second place finisher Paul Hagan of Petoskey (14:24:43.3), while Eric Stoll of Silverwood took third (14:56:22.3).

In the second longest race, the 50-mile, Brad Patterson of Grand Rapids finished first with a time of 8:19.54.3. Alex White of Washington took second (8:26:07.8) and Zeeland’s Jeff Vander Kooi finished third (9:21:28.2).

On the female side, Stephanie Schreiber of Battle Creek was the champion at 11:24:55.5. Vicki Hunter of Boulder, Colo. finished second (11:48:54.9) and Michelle Streelman of Byron Center took third (12:44:49.1).

In the shortest of the three events, the 50K, some U.P. runners finished in the top five.

On the men’s side, Marquette runners Joe Jameson (5:13:07.2) and Greg Borzick (5:27:05.7) finished in third and fourth place respectively. Jake Hegge of Onalaska, Wis. won the race with a time of 4:25:54.2, while Nic Giebler of Plymouth, Wis. took second (5:02:33.5).

In the female bracket, Houghton’s Cindy Harwood finished second with a time of 6:36:39.1 and Negaunee’s Brittany Cappoferri took fourth (7:27:21.3). Elizabeth Whiting of Manchester, N.H. won the race at 5:14:13.7, and Hope Bollig of Mankato, Minn. finished third (6:44:19.5).
