Ishpeming crowns 36th annual champs

ISHPEMING – Championships were decided in the three divisions of the 36th annual Ishpeming High School Alumni Softball Tournament at Al Quaal Recreation Area on Saturday.

In the veteran Hematite Division, the Class of 1962 finished its run in this tourney on a high note, holding off the combined classes of 1966-70, 17-15. Ray Butler and Mike Chapman each went 3 for 3 to lead the ’62ers, who are said to have just entered their 70s.

In the White Division, the Class of 2000 nipped 2014, 9-8, as Cliff Carter was named offensive MVP. The 2000s also named the late Adam Gray as their defensive MVP after he passed away just a few weeks ago.

And in the Blue Division, the combined classes of 1989-90 outscored 1996-97, 22-15, as the winners’ Tom Bleau was named offensive MVP and Vito Carello defensive MVP.
