Champions crowned at Westwood

ISHPEMING – Champions were crowned in four divisions of the Westwood High School Alumni Softball Tournament on Sunday.

National Mine barely prevailed in its annual game against Champion, winning 10-9 as Fred Cox led the way going 3 for 4 with a triple. Teammates Fred VanLuven and Judy Morcom added two hits, while Jen Mitchell paced Champion on offense.

In the Red Division, the classes of 1978-79-80 defended their championship, clubbing 1981-82-83, 16-1. The winners’ Dennis Nault hit an over-the-fence homer, while Matt LaFountain was 3 for 4 with a double and Becky Clark 2 for 4. For 81-82-83, Blaine Knutsen made two leaping catches for outs.

In the White Division, Shane Nault was 3 for 3 to lead 1998 over 1993, 18-2.

In the Blue Division, Jake Greer slammed two over-the-fence homers and went 4 for 5 to help 2008 overcome 2002, 13-9. Greer finished with four of the six out-of-the-park homers hit over the holiday weekend. For 2002, Andy Kruger and Kurt Corcoran each were 3 for 4.

On Saturday, 1998 dropped 1995, 17-2, with Amy Coduti going 3 for 3. Tim Palomaki of ’98 and Chad Hewitt of ’95 each were 2 for 2.

1978-79-80 blew past 1986, 15-1, as the winners’ Dennis Nault was 4 for 4 while EJ Kostreva and Dean Stetson of 1986 went 2 for 3.

1981-82-83 shut out 1975-76-77, 5-0, as Mike Wasie was 3 for 3 with a run scored and teammate Steve Perry homered.

Paul Honkala was 3 for 3, all doubles, to help 2002 nip 2007, 5-4.

Greer was 4 for 4 and Chris Steele had three hits to lead 2008 past 2009, 12-3.

Michelle Beltrame and Shay Korpi both went 4 for 4 to help 1993 outscore 1992, 22-3.

Jeremy Steele belted an out-of-the-park homer to lead 1998 past 2001, 15-7.
