SAULT STE. MARIE – After a tough battle Friday night, the Northern Michigan Wildcats were able to shut down Lake Superior State Saturday to stay undefeated.

The Wildcats improved to 4-0 overall by completing a sweep of the Upper Peninsula rival Lakers by a score of 3-0. NMU outshot LSSU 36-23 as goalie Mathias Dahlstrom picked up his fourth win and second shutout. The Lakers remain winless on the season at 0-8.

Shane Sooth got NMU on the board just 40 seconds into the second period with his first goal of the season. Robbie Payne notched the assist.

John Siemer put the Wildcats up 2-0 with his second goal this season shortly after the start of the third period. Darren Nowick got the assist and continued his great start to the 2014-15 season as he has four goals and five points.

Joseph Manno then nailed down the win as well as the sweep of the Wildcats’ first WCHA series this season with his first goal with around eight minutes left. Gerard Hanson got the assist.

The first period was a tight affair with both teams getting chances. But they were shut down by Dahlstrom and Lakers goalie Gordon Defiel.

NMU returns home next weekend for its first series at the Berry Events Center this season. The Wildcats play Alabama-Huntsville with the puck dropping at 7:07 p.m. Friday.
