EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The nationally ranked women’s wrestling team at Northern Michigan University proved worthy of their No. 11 ranking by compiling a pretty nifty 42-5 match record at the 8 Women Battles held last Saturday.

Hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, team scores weren’t kept as a dozen schools competed from Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois and Iowa.

All 10 Wildcats who wrestled finished in the top five of their weight divisions, with five of them winning their weight class after going undefeated.

Freshman Jamie Cook had a perfect 5-0 record at 124 pounds to claim her division, winning four matches with pins in the first 90 seconds, the other victory a 10-0 technical fall that was called before that match was three minutes old. In the championship, she took out Amelia Adams of Wisconsin-Stevens Point with a pin at 1:03.

Another 5-0 NMU wrestler was junior Alissa Caltagirone at 145 pounds, who captured her title with three pins and two tech falls, the finale a 12-2 tech fall victory at 4:37 over Annelise Obermark of Simpson (Iowa).

Also coming in with a 5-0 mark was Northern junior Mickaela Keane at 207, recording two pins, a tech fall and two rather lopsided decisions — 9-0 and 8-1. In her title bout, she pinned Angel Hill of Illinois Wesleyan at 4:32.

Doing just as well with a 4-0 record for a title at 138 was Wildcats sophomore Keaton Hood, who had three pins and a close 5-3 decision. Her championship came with a pin at 4:53 over Margaret Zuber of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Also putting up a 4-0 record was Northern sophomore Abbie Miles for the 180 title, with a pin and three tech falls, all coming in the first 90 seconds. Her title was won by pin at 57 seconds of sophomore teammate Clarissa Wangen.

So Wangen finished as runner-up in the same 180 division, adding to a second place notched by sophomore teammate Sophia Bassino at 160. Each of those wrestlers compiled 4-1 records with their only a loss in the final. Wangen had two pins and a tech fall, all in the first 90 seconds, along with a decision, while Bassino had two pins and two tech falls in her victories, each coming in the first two minutes.

NMU freshman Alyssa Keane was 4-1 to finish third at 138, while sophomore Samantha Chaon was also 4-1 and took fourth in the same 138 division.

And Northern junior Zhivanna Magdaleno put together a 3-2 record for fifth place at 117.

The Wildcats are off this weekend but get back in action on Dec. 7 at the first Great Lakes Valley Conference duals to be held at Quincy University in Quincy, Illinois.

Later on in December, NMU hosts the Northern Duals at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 19.
