A dozen honored: 5 area schools — Negaunee, Westwood, Ishpeming, Gwinn and Manistique — have 12 players share in Mid-Peninsula Conference awards for boys basketball
NEGAUNEE — With Negaunee and Westwood leading the way, a dozen area players won a total of 14 awards when the Mid-Peninsula Conference recently named its high school boys basketball honors.
A pair of Negaunee players were named to the M-PC First Team as a total of four Miners gathered five awards.
Westwood senior Jerzee Karki won one of the league’s special awards, the Defensive Player of the Year, along with making the M-PC Second Team.
Two Patriots won awards, as did three from Ishpeming, two from Manistique and one from Gwinn.
Negaunee senior Mason Sager was named to the M-PC First Team and also earned a berth on the First Team Defense.
Miners’ junior Gavin Saunders also made the M-PC First Team, while senior teammate Gavin Downey joined Sager on the First Team Defense and sophomore Ty Jacobson won honorable mention.
From Westwood, junior Andrew Niemi made the M-PC First Team to join Karki in winning honors.
Sophomore Caden Luoma headed up Ishpeming honorees by making the M-PC First Team, as junior Hunter Smith made the First Team Defense and senior Alex Sundberg earned honorable mention.
For Manistique, senior Bryce Blixt and junior Wyatt Demers each made the M-PC Second Team.
And for Gwinn, junior Conner Dupras earned honorable mention.
Iron Mountain sophomore Oskar Kangas was named the M-PC Player of the Year.
