Upper Peninsula No. 3 Houghton girls basketball team comes back for 66-50 win over Marquette Redettes

HOUGHTON — Consistency on both ends of the court was the name of the game for the Houghton girls basketball team on Monday as it posted a 66-50 win against visiting Marquette.

The win was because of the 15-1 Gremlins’ comeback in the second half as they trailed for much of the first two quarters and were down by one point at the half, 27-26.

“Toughness on both ends of the court was key tonight,” Houghton coach Julie Filpus said. “(Marquette) posted some strong runs in the second and the fourth (quarters), but we were able to stay calm and composed and keep our heads in the game.”

The Gremlins opened the third with a 7-3 run to take a 33-30 lead with 5:50 to go. That morphed into a 10-point lead by the time two minutes were left in the period.

The Houghton girls were patient with their shots, worked the ball well and took advantage of some turnovers by Marquette.

Coach Ben Smith of Marquette (7-10) said that his girls committed too many fouls at key points.

“After they took the lead in the third, I think we got sloppy as we were playing catchup and that led to us fouling too much,” he said. “We just could not put a scoring run together.”

The Gremlins were an impressive 23 of 27 at the free throw line (85%).

Senior Meghan Trewhella was 11 of 12 alone in free throws. She went on to lead her team with 28 points.

“Meghan had another tremendous game,” Filpus said. “But we had eight other girls score at least two points.”

Houghton’s Annika Peterson contributed 15 points as the Gremlins’ only other scorer in double figures.

For the Redettes, Meghan MacPhee had 11 points and Julia Ott 10.
