Team records fall, U.P. Finals times set at Negaunee in meet between I-N Gators, Manistique

NEGAUNEE — Several school records were broken and Upper Peninsula Finals qualifying times were met in seven events during a high school swimming and diving meet between Ishpeming-Negaunee and Manistique on Jan. 31.

The Marquette County cooperative called the Gators swept to titles at its home pool at Negaunee High School, winning a narrow 72-60 decision in the boys meet to go with a 123-49 victory for the girls.

Each team set a school record. For I-N, girls diving winner Nori Korsman scored 149.25 points and runner-up Amara Rasmussen put up 148.5 points, both beating out the former record of 143.75 established in 2010 by Jen Maat as part of the former GRIMN (Gwinn-Republic-Michigamme-Ishpeming-Negaunee) team.

In the boys meet, the Emeralds’ Dustin Brewster won the 100-yard freestyle in 52.66 seconds, breaking the Manistique record while also qualifying for the U.P. Finals.

He also qualified for the finals in the 50 free in 23.94.

A Manistique teammate qualified for the U.P. Finals in the same two events in the girls meet — Carley Schoenow clocked 29.62 in the 50 free and 1:07.03 in the 100 free.

Other finals qualifiers included I-N’s Emma LaFave in the girls’ 100 butterfly in 1:26.60, I-N’s Blake Holmgren in the boys’ 100 fly in 1:17.50 and Manistique’s Nate Schoenow in the boys’ 200 individual medley in 2:20.44.

One interesting note from the meet was that despite the Manistique boys winning a majority of the events — seven of the 12 — the Gators still managed to pull out the team victory.

And there was one girls winner who had a faster time than her boys counterpart. The Emeralds’ Tammy Nadeau clocked 7:15.9 in the girls 500 free, while I-N’s James Dusette won that boys race in 8:15.12.

Overall, there were a quartet of four-time winners, two from the Gators’ girls and two from the Manistique boys.

LaFave not only won the girls’ 100 fly, but also took the 200 IM and swam legs on I-N’s victorious 200 free and 400 free relays.

Teammate Kina Salmela won the girls’ 100 breaststroke and swam on the triumphant 200 medley, 200 free and 400 free relays.

For the Emeralds, Brewster not only won the 50 and 100 free, but swam legs on the boys’ winning 200 medley and 400 free relays.

Teammate Nate Schoenow was on the same two relays plus his finals’ qualifying 200 IM as he also won the boys’ 100 breast.

The meet’s single three-time winner was Manistique’s Grant Mason as he was on the same two relays as Brewster and Nate Schoenow while also winning the boys’ 100 backstroke.

There were numerous single and double winners, too.

Doubling up were I-N boys Alec Arvon in the diving and 200 free relay and Dusette in the 500 free and 200 free relay.

The Manistique boys’ two-time winner was Spencer Miotke in the 200 medley and 400 free relays.

For the I-N girls, double winners were Bella North in the 200 medley and 400 free relays, Payton Ihamaki in the 200 medley and 200 free relays, and Kiley Baysore in the 200 free and 400 free relays.

And for the Manistique girls, winning twice was Carley Schoenow in her finals’ qualifying 50 and 100 free, along with Nadeau in the 500 free and 100 back.

Single winners included the I-N boys’ Alex Ossenheimer in the 200 free, Blake Holmgren in the 100 fly, and Joey Giroux and Bryce Foisie, both in the 200 free relay.

For the Gators’ girls were Lola Dockery in the 200 medley relay, Emily DeMarois in the 200 free and Korsman in the diving.

The I-N teams are hosting Houghton for a dual meet at 4 p.m. Thursday. After that, both teams will be at the U.P. Finals at Marquette Senior High School on Friday, Feb. 17, for diving and Saturday, Feb. 18, for swimming.
