BAY CITY — More than four dozen Northern Michigan University student-athletes were recognized recently for academic excellence by the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Fifty of these 87 NMU students were recognized at the highest level, All-Academic Excellence, for having a cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 or higher on a 4.00 scale.

The other 37 earned an All-Academic Award for having GPAs between 3.00 and 3.49.

In both categories, a student-athlete must be on his or her team’s active roster at the conclusion of the season and not be a freshman or first-year transfer. Redshirt freshman are eligible, however.

Most of NMU’s varsity teams compete in the GLIAC. Among the exceptions are hockey, which is a member of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, and nordic skiing, which is a member of the Central Ski Athletic Association.

Other non-NCAA sports are also outside the GLIAC, including weightlifting, alpine skiing and esports.

The conference honored 844 student-athletes in all, 479 on the All-Academic Excellence list and 365 on All-Academic.
