Westwood Patriots’ Tyler Annala, Negaunee Miners’ Rachel Niskanen medal in Negaunee Range Bank high school golf meet at Wawonowin Country Club

CHAMPION — Tyler Annala and Rachel Niskanen shot the low rounds of the day and led their schools to team titles at the Negaunee Range Bank Invitational high school golf meet held at Wawonowin Country Club on Tuesday.

Annala shot 73 to lead Westwood to the boys title. Annala beat out Patriots’ teammate and younger brother Tanner Annala by two strokes as Tanner shot 75.

Next best was Kingsford’s Cole Myllyla and Houghton’s Marino Pisani each with 79.

The Westwood boys accumulated a score of 324, 11 strokes ahead of second-place Houghton and third-place Kingsford, both with 335 as the fifth-player tiebreaker broke their deadlock.ds

In the girls meet, Niskanen shot 79 for a whopping 19-stroke advantage for medalist honors over Kingsford’s Grace Maki with 98.

Niskanen also led her Negaunee team — the event host — to a huge 44-stroke victory over the Flivvers. The Miners totaled 395 to Kingsford’s 439 as Westwood was a close third with 445.

In all, four boys and six girls from Negaunee and Westwood landed in each meet’s top 10.

In the boys meet, after the Annalas was Negaunee’s Corbin Erva, who tied for sixth but fell to seventh on a tiebreaker with 81. And Westwood’s Garrett Sundberg tied for eighth — ninth on the tiebreaker — with 83.

Among girls after Niskanen and Maki, the Patriots’ Jillian Koski was third with 100, Negaunee’s Josie Smith fifth with 103 and Westwood’s Laci Moffatt and the Miners’ Daylyn Drew tied for sixth with 104. Moffatt finished sixth and Drew seventh on the tiebreaker.

Also for the Pats in the top 10 was Kalle Keranen, tied for eighth with 105 as she did place eighth.

Gwinn also competed but without a full team in either meet. The Modeltowners’ best shooters were Dylan Derouin with 118 in the boys meet and Madeline Wixtrom with 146 in the girls.

All three Marquette County teams are scheduled to join Marquette and Manistique at the Munising Invitational at Pictured Rocks Golf Course at 10 a.m. Friday.
