CALUMET — Calumet broke open a close game in the middle two quarters to take a 64-31 victory over Marquette in a high school girls basketball game played at the Copper Kings’ gym on Monday evening.

Calumet improved to 10-0 and has been ranked the No. 1 Upper Peninsula team in Divisions 1-3 all this month by the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

The Redettes (5-7) trailed just 11-10 after one quarter before the Copper Kings pumped up their offense in the second, outscoring MSHS 25-3 to take a 36-13 halftime lead.

Calumet continued pouring it on in the third, taking a 56-21 lead into the fourth quarter. In the final period, however, Marquette held a 10-8 scoring advantage.

Brooke Logan led the Redettes with eight points, which included a pair of 3-pointers, while Maria Millado added six points, Zoe Smith five and Meghan MacPhee four.

The Kings’ Jana Loukus led all scorers with 18 points as she made five triples, all in the middle two quarters, while teammate Laina Kariniemi added 14 points and Marybeth Halonen 12 points and a team-high five rebounds.

Calumet also held a narrow 30-28 advantage in rebounds, though no MSHS leader was available.
