MIDWAY, Utah — With a number of skiers unable to participate due to health and safety guidelines, several Northern Michigan University skiers had good finishes at the final day of the U.S. Cross Country Ski Championships held at Soldier Hollow Nordic Center.

Wildcats’ men’s racer Kjetil Baanerud was 12th in the men’s senior classic sprint race in 4 minutes, 40.66 seconds in the semifinals, which was his third of three races. It also put him sixth in the men’s Senior 1 class.

Teammate Kristoffer Karsrud was right behind in 4:02.32, his quarterfinals time, that placed him 15th and sixth in the men’s under-23 class.

NMU’s Daniel Streinz was 17th with a quarterfinal time of 4:05.52, while teammate Matthew Bourne was 42nd in 3:30.85 in his qualifier race.

Former Northern skier Ian Torchia was fifth in 4:13.92 in the finals, while ex-NMU women’s racer Rosie Frankowski was 13th among senior women in 5:02.90 in the quarterfinals.

In the men’s junior classic sprint, Northern’s Cooper Lennox was 30th overall and in the top 20 in the men’s under-20 class in 3:51.02 in the qualifying run.

In the women’s junior classic sprint, NMU’s Gretchen Haggenmiller was 23rd overall in 5:19.71 in the quarterfinals and 10th in the under-20 division. Lauren McCollor was 29th overall in 4:23.73 in qualifying and 13th in U20.

The Wildcats take this weekend off before heading to Mount Itasca in Coleraine, Minnesota, for the Itasca CXC Cup on Jan. 22-23.
