Calumet girls basketball team runs by Gwinn Modeltowners, 72-20

CALUMET — Upper Peninsula No. 1 Calumet got out to a fast start and raced past Gwinn 72-20 in a high school girls basketball game played Friday at the Copper Kings’ gym.

Calumet was top ranked in last week’s U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association weekly poll for Divisions 1-3.

They proved why by making six 3-pointers in the first quarter and taking a 31-4 lead entering the second period.

It jumped to 49-11 by halftime as the Kings’ Marybeth Halonen led all scorers with 16 points. Teammate Jana Loukus added 15 and Caitlyn Strom 13.

Lena Pleaugh paced the Modeltowners with 12 points, hitting 6 of 9 free throws and adding three second-half baskets.

Gwinn gets back on the court tonight when it hosts Westwood at 7:15 p.m.
