Calumet girls basketball team outscores Ishpeming, 54-32, on Tuesday

CALUMET — Laina Kariniemi and Marybeth Halonen each sank a trio of 3-pointers as Calumet raced past Ishpeming 54-32 in a high school girls basketball game played Tuesday evening at the Copper Kings’ gym.

Kariniemi scored a game-high 16 points while Halonen was second in scoring with 13 as Calumet built a 20-5 lead after one quarter and led 31-13 at halftime.

The Hematites wiped out a bit of the Copper Kings’ lead in the third quarter, holding a 14-11 scoring edge, but Calumet still had a healthy 15-point lead heading into the final period.

Sophomore Addie Morton led Ishpeming’s balanced scoring attack with nine points, while sophomore teammate Jenna Maki added eight, senior Abby Koski seven and sophomore Lilly Swanson six. Koski made 4 of 4 free throws, all in the fourth quarter.

For the Copper Kings, Alexis Strom also scored 10 points, including 6 of 10 free throws, all her makes coming in the first half.

Calumet’s statistics also showed it holding a 24-18 rebounding advantage, led by Lizzie Torola with seven.

“Seven” was also the operative number elsewhere for the Kings, as that’s how many assists Jana Loukus had and the number of steals made by Strom.

The Hematites are off until next Thursday, when they host Hancock at 7:15 p.m.
