MARQUETTE — Senior defenseman Trevor Cosgrove is turning into an offensive machine for the Northern Michigan University hockey team in his first year with the team.

The transfer from Colgate of the ECAC was named CCHA Defenseman of the Week for the second time already this fall on Monday after scoring four points in the Wildcats’ sweep of previously No. 1 Minnesota-Duluth last weekend.

Cosgrove, a native of Exeter, New Hampshire, also earned the same league award on Nov. 8 following a three-point weekend against Boston University.

This time, Cosgrove led NMU in points in Friday’s 5-4 victory with a goal and two assists in a career-best game. His final point that night was the primary assist on the game-winning, empty-net goal late in the game.

He added an assist in Saturday’s 5-2 win, making a stretch pass from deep in the Wildcats’ defensive zone that found teammate AJ Vanderbeck alone in the neutral zone for a breakaway chance.

While the now 10-5-1 Bulldogs tumbled to No. 5 in the USCHO.com rankings following their pair of defeats in Marquette, NMU moved into the top 20 at 19th with their 10-6-1 record

The only other CCHA team in the top 20 is Minnesota State-Mankato (14-4), which bumped up a spot to No. 1 after a home sweep of Michigan Tech last weekend. Four other CCHA teams — Bemidji State, MTU, Bowling Green State and Lake Superior State — also received votes.

Northern is 8-1-1 in its last 10 games and conclude play before the holiday break this weekend at Lake Superior State in Sault Ste. Marie. Game times are 7 p.m. Friday and 6 p.m. Saturday.

And NMU’s first series back from the holidays will be against Cosgrove’s former team, Colgate, at the Berry Events Center on Jan. 7-8.
