Northern Michigan University Wildcats’ hockey player Michael Van Unen suspended for 2 games

DEEPHAVEN, Minn. — The CCHA announced Sunday that NMU sophomore defenseman Michael Van Unen has been suspended two games following a five-minute major penalty and game misconduct in a game against St. Thomas on Saturday.

The penalty was called for contact to the head at the 18:25 mark of the first period in the second game of the series, which the Wildcats swept 4-1 and 8-3 to start the regular season.

Review of the incident by the CCHA office headquarters determined the penalty would result in supplemental discipline, according to a news release from the league.

The suspension takes effect for NMU’s next two NCAA games, which means it won’t be enforced for the Wildcats’ exhibition game against the U.S. National Team Developmental Program Under-18 team on Friday.

Instead, Van Unen will have to sit out Northern’s home game against Notre Dame on Saturday and another home game against Bemidji State on Friday, Oct. 22.
