Heidi Billings

MARQUETTE — Freshman Heidi Billings of the women’s swimming team at Northern Michigan University was named GLIAC Women’s Swimmer of the Week for her performance at a three-team, two-day meet last weekend.

Billings had a hand in five victories for the Wildcats in meets with St. Cloud State and Davenport.

She won three individual events on Saturday, taking the 200-yard backstroke in 2 minutes, 2.58 seconds, the 100 back in 56.93 seconds and the 200 individual medley in 2:08.47.

She also swam on two relay winners. She was with the 400 mixed backstroke relay that won on Friday in 3:37.12, then was on Saturday’s victorious women’s 200 medley relay in 1:46.93.

Both women’s and men’s teams from Northern swept their double dual meets to open the regular season.

Billings’ honor was the first weekly award earned by an NMU swimmer since December 2019.

The NMU team hits the road for back-to-back meets on Oct. 29 in Allendale at Grand Valley State and on Oct. 30 in University Center at Saginaw Valley State.

Their next home meet in Nov. 5-6 against Wayne State.
