MARQUETTE — Maybe this college hockey thing isn’t so hard after all.

Northern Michigan University freshman goaltender Charlie Glockner, could be, but almost certainly isn’t thinking that after his regular-season debut at the Wildcats’ Berry Events Center over the weekend.

For his efforts in NMU’s exhibition win over the U.S. National Team Development Program Under-18 team and relief duty in a game that counted against Notre Dame, Glockner was named the CCHA Goaltender of the Week on Monday.

The Minnetonka, Minnesota, native earned his first career start and win in the weekend opener against the USNTDP squad on Friday, turning away 41 of 44 shots as Northern won 5-3. That included 25 shots in the third period, when he also stopped a penalty shot, reading the play and swatting the puck aside.

He was awarded First Star of the Game honors that night.

Then on Saturday against the No. 17 Fighting Irish, he entered the game less than two minutes into the second period in relief of NMU starter Rico DiMatteo. With the Wildcats trailing 4-0, Glockner stopped every shot he faced over the remainder of the game as Northern pulled back within two goals before an ND empty-netter made the final 5-2.

For the weekend, Glockner was in net for 97 minutes, 36 seconds, allowing three goals while making 60 saves.

It was, of course, his first but also NMU’s first CCHA weekly award with the restart of the conference this fall.
