Neguanee girls tennis team dominates with 7-1 win over Munising, Miners improve to 13-0

NEGAUNEE — Negaunee was particularly strong in doubles as the Miners girls tennis team defeated Munising 7-1 at the NHS courts on Thursday afternoon.

In sweeping the four doubles flights, Negaunee (13-0) lost just four games, including 6-0, 6-0 shutouts posted by the No. 3 tandem of Olivia Lunseth and Maddie Frustaglio and No. 4 pairing of Kallen Schultz and Aubrey Johnson.

“As a team we did a lot of nice things that you want to see at this point in the year,” Miners head coach Kyle Saari said in an email. “Doubles teams did a nice job of controlling pace through the wind, hitting good angles; chemistry is solid throughout.”

The coach was also pleased with play at the top two singles flights. Negaunee No. 1 Lilly Nelson dispatched the Mustangs’ Logan Peters 6-0, 6-0, and Miners No. 2 Daylyn Drew fended off Munising’s Mackenzie Richardson 6-2, 6-1.

“Lilly’s year reminds me a lot of Will Luke’s,” Saari said of a Negaunee boys player who didn’t lose a single set all of last spring while earning the Upper Peninsula championship in No. 1 singles. “She’s humble and just quietly handles her business, and we’re real proud of what she’s accomplished so far this year. She’s hungry still and wants to keep rolling, making her fun to watch.

“Daylyn has been real similar at No. 2 singles, too. She’s real steady, always the same, and that fits real well at that flight.”

The Mustangs picked up their hard-fought victory at No. 3 singles, where Jenna Matson outlasted the Miners’ Izzy Kantola in a third-set tiebreak, 7-5, 6-7 (5-7), 10-8.

Negaunee returns to the courts on Monday at Escanaba.
