MARQUETTE — The Marquette Senior High School boys soccer team kept its perfect record alive this season after defeating Boyne City 2-0 in the Redmen’s home opener on Tuesday evening.

Following Marquette’s 8-1 victory over the same Ramblers squad in Traverse City last weekend, MSHS got both of its goals on Tuesday in the first half and from leading scorer Max Dawson to improve to 5-0. Dawson registered his 11th and 12th goals this season in only five matches.

The junior scored just four minutes into the game off a pass from senior Axel Vermaat, adding the insurance marker near the 32-minute mark when senior John Weber made a pass to Vermaat, who made the scoring set-up pass to Dawson.

Senior Harrison Anthos worked in the Marquette net, stopping eight shots that included a penalty kick in the second half.

“We were good at times and sloppy at times,” MSHS head coach Dan Salmon said. “There is still plenty to work on. Harrison Anthos was really solid in net when we needed him and the defense bent but didn’t break.”

Marquette travels to Boyne City for the third game between the teams in a week at 2 p.m. Friday before the Redmen continue south to play at the Saginaw Heritage Showcase on Saturday.
