KINGSFORD — Sophomore Baux Truckey made quite an impression in her first Upper Peninsula Finals in girls track and field, helping the Marquette girls retain their Division 1 title with 120 points on Saturday.

The Redettes were followed by Sault Ste. Marie with 94 and Menominee with 71. Westwood finished seventh with 26, Negaunee tied for eighth with 21 and Manistique 11th with 3.

Truckey won the 100-meter dash in 12.79 seconds and 200 (26.58), edging teammate Julia Ott on a lean on what was believed to be the hottest U.P. Finals on record.

She also anchored the 800 relay along with a record-setting 400 relay that set the U.P. mark with 50.11 seconds, shaving more than a second off the previous best of 51.22 seconds by Gladstone in 2007.

“Our handoffs went real well,” Truckey said. “Going 1-2 in the 200 was fun, but the heat was a factor. It was a relief to get done today. We have a lot of competition in practice, which I think is very helpful.”

Ott won high jump with 5 feet and was clocked in 13.1 and 26.6 seconds in the 100 and 200, respectively, on a day which temperatures hovered in the low to mid 90s with a heat index of 99 degrees.

Teammates Kali McDonough captured pole vault (10-1) and Olivia Moffitt added a first in the 3,200 (12:00.03).

Marquette senior Guinn Wuorinen was nipped at the finish of the 1,600 by Houghton senior Ingrid Seagren, taking second in 5:34.59.

Teammate Maria Millado placed third in long jump (15-4 1/4).

For west end schools, Westwood’s Elizabeth Williams provided a third place in the 800 (2:31.73) and Negaunee’s Lauren Ossenheimer was third in the 3,200 (13:03.62).

Marquette’s fourth-place finishers were Clarissa Remillard in the 400 (1:03.41), McDonough in the 300 hurdles (51.12), Wuorinen in the 800 (2:37.55) and its 1,600 (4:28.31) and 3,200 relays (10:38.77).

Negaunee’s Seere Helms-Gleason was fourth in long jump (15-2), as was the Miners’ Eliana Juchemich in shot put (33-1).

Westwood’s fifth-place finishers include Westwood’s Elizabeth Williams in the 400 (1:04.19), Allyssea Smith in 300 hurdles (52.65), Laretta Boburka in the 3,200 (13:10.03). Avery Mariuzza in pole vault (7-6) and the Patriots’ 1,600 relay (4:33.5).

Also taking fifth were Negaunee’s 400 relay (55.12) and Manistique’s 3,200 relay (10:54.19).

Sixths went to Westwood’s 3,200 relay (10:56.51) and Natalie Blanck in the pole vault (7-0); Negaunee junior Endla Harris in the 1,600 (5:53.84) and 3,200 (13:18.92), Helms-Gleason in the 400 (1:04.19), Raquel Carlson in high jump (4-4) and Juchemich in discus (83-1); and Manistique’s Danielle Lund in shot (31-4).
