NAPERVILLE, Ill. — The women’s track and field season officially came to an end Friday for Northern Michigan University when freshman Selena Johnson won the triple jump at the Dr. Keeler Invitational held at North Central College.

Johnson, who won event more consistently than any other Wildcat this winter and spring, won the event at this “last chance” meet that gives athletes another chance to qualify for the the NCAA Division II national championships.

She leaped 11.62 meters (38 feet, 1.5 inches) to win by just over two inches — or less than one-tenth of a meter — over Eka Jose of Washington University.

Apparently that wasn’t good enough, though, to qualify for the NCAA nationals, as an NCAA website, ncaaorg.s3.amazonaws.com, listed the automatic qualifying distance at sea level of 12.77 meters and provisional distance at 11.89 meters.

Johnson was the lone NMU competitor at the Illinois meet.

Johnson also won the triple jump at the GLIAC Outdoor Track & Field Championship held about a week earlier downstate at Davenport.

She was then named to the All-GLIAC First Team as senior teammate Nina Augsten made it to the Second Team.
