ESCANABA — Marquette provided stiff competition here Friday as it swept both ends of a triangular track meet held at Escanaba High School.

The Marquette boys scored 92 points, followed by Escanaba with 61 and Gwinn with 20.

“We had some real good performances,” Marquette coach Kyle Detmers said. “Escanaba and Gwinn also had some nice performances. Derek Douglas had quite a day for Esky.”

The Marquette girls collected 105 points, followed by Esky with 57 and Gwinn 10.

Douglas, whose plans are to run track and cross country at St. Scholastica College in Duluth, Minnesota, next season, won the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 8.34 seconds and 1600 in 4:58 on a cloudy, chilly and windy day.

“Derek had a good day,” Esky coach Scott Dykema said. “He wanted to break five minutes in the 1600 and said he had more in the tank.

“We have some good sprinters, but struggled in the relays because we had some guys missing. Marquette has a great team.”

Esky’s Trevor DeGrand won pole vault at 10 feet, and Reilly Huskey and Joey Kositzky shared first in high jump at 5-foot-2.

Marquette’s Cayden Dahlin was a double winner, taking the shot put and discus, while Gwinn’s David Duvall captured the 110 hurdles and long jump.

Redman senior Kameron Karp added a victory in the 200 and was runner-up for the first time this season in the 100, won by teammate Owen Beauchamp in 11.09.

“We had real good performances by Colin (VanderSchaaf) and Carson (VanderSchaaf) in the 3200 (won by Colin VanderSchaaf) and Lincoln Sager in the 400,” Detmers said. “Those were real good times for the conditions. This was a good effort by our whole team.”

Marquette also swept to victory in all four boys relays as the Redmen’s Truman Langlois captured the 300 hurdles.

Esky junior Ciara Ostrenga won the girls’ 800 and anchored the winning 1600 relay. Classmate Allison Korpi copped the discus.

“It was a tough day, but I thought our girls performed pretty well,” Esky coach Dan DeLong said. “This was the first time Ciara ran the 800 without running the open 400. She had a nice race, and Allison’s throw in discus was a personal best.”

Marquette sophomore Baux Truckey won the 100 and 200 while anchoring the winning sprint relays, while Tianna Taylor achieved Gwinn’s lone first in shot put.

The Redettes’ Kali McDonough took both the 300 hurdles and pole vault.

The Redettes’ Haddie Ketzenberger won the 100 hurdles as MSHS won three of the four relays.

Teammate Guinn Wuorinen took the 1,600, Olivia Moffitt the 3,200, Brooklyn Michelin the 400, Julia Ott the high jump and Maria Millado the long jump.
