AUGUSTA — Northern Michigan University freshman Annie Pietila missed winning the tournament by just one stroke at the GLIAC Women’s Golf Championship held at Stonehedge Golf Club near Battle Creek over the weekend.

Pietila, who finished as runner-up, shot rounds of even-par 72 on Friday and 2-under 70 on Saturday for a 142 total. It’s also the best 36-hole individual score in NMU women’s golf history.

That was just one stroke shy of Grand Valley State’s Katie Chipman who put together rounds of 68 and 73 for 141, 3-under-par.

Pietila was also three strokes clear of the third-place finisher, GVSU’s Megan Miron, who had 145.

The NMU freshman led her Wildcats to a sixth-place finish in the 10-team field with 628. Grand Valley won the team title easily with 582 as Wayne State was runner-up with 608. Northwood was third with 613, followed by Davenport with 618 and Ferris State 620.

Following Northern was Saginaw Valley State with 631, Lake Superior State 643, Ashland 652 and Purdue Northwest 682.

NMU senior Caro Els also had a solid tourney with rounds of 75 and 82 for 157, good for a tie for 24th and fifth-best in program history.

Following her was junior teammate Abigail Boozer, 32nd and ninth-best in NMU history, with 82-80–162.

Escanaba High School graduate and NMU sophomore Paxton Johnson had 82-85–167, a tie for 36th, then freshman Payton Dube had 92-90–182 to place 47th.

This event ended NMU’s regular season as GLIAC golfers await announcement of the field for the NCAA Division II National Championship to be made Monday.
