Northern Michigan University Wildcats suffer 1st GLIAC loss Friday

MARQUETTE — The women’s lacrosse team at Northern Michigan University suffered the first blemish on its perfect GLIAC record on Friday afternoon when Grand Valley State posted a 19-9 victory in the Superior Dome.

The Lakers took over first place in the GLIAC at 4-0 as NMU stood at 4-1.

The Wildcats also had their four-game winning streak, longest in program history, snapped with the loss.

Jessica Daniels led Northern scorers with four goals and led the team with five shots.

GVSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead and was never caught, though NMU scored the next two goals off the sticks of Clara Johnson and Emily Renfrew to pull within one about six minutes in.

The Wildcats stayed within range for most of the first half, still only trailing 8-5 with 10:53 left on a Madeline Bittell goal.

But the Lakers bridged the halves with six straight goals, three in the last eight minutes of the first half and three more in the first first four minutes after intermission.

The closest NMU got after that was at 14-6 following a Kaitlyn Bridger goal with 25:19 to go.

Katelyn Mongold scored with 2:30 left for an 18-9 score.

Bittell finished with two assists as Mongold had one. Teammate Lauryn Rygiel scooped up a game-high four ground balls, goalkeeper Cam Stilson went the distance and made 10 saves.
