MARQUETTE — Neguanee High School graduate Carter Mason was the individual winner while leading the men’s golf team of Northern Michigan University at the Kentucky Wesleyan Invitational held over the weekend in Owensboro, Kentucky.

Then on Tuesday, NMU women’s golfer Caro Els finished as individual runner-up at the NC4K College Classic in Blacklick, Ohio.

Mason leads the way

Mason, a junior at NMU, carded a 3-over-par 147 to win by three strokes ahead of a half-dozen golfers from GLIAC members Davenport and Wisconsin-Parkside, along with Southern Indiana, McKendree and Missouri S&T.

He entered the Saturday’s second day of play tied for third after shooting 74 in his opening round, then finished with 73 after the first day’s co-leaders shot 78 and 82.

In Mason’s second round, he posted four birdies, five bogeys and nine pars at The Pearl Club.

NMU finished seventh among the 12 teams competing with a score of 627. McKendree won with 611, with Davenport a stroke back at 612. Missouri S&T was third with 617, while Wisconsin-Parkside and Kentucky Wesleyan tied for fourth with 620 and Southern Indiana sixth with 624. The Wildcats finished ahead of Lewis, Kentucky State, Purdue Northwest and Brescia A and B teams.

Junior Nick Rowley was second-best shooter for Northern, tying for 14th with 80 and 74 for 154. Other NMU scorers were freshman Blake Ramirez, tied for 32nd with 77-85–162; freshman Caden Dunn, tied for 36th with 84-80–164; and junior James Callahan, 49th with 84-87–171.

The Wildcats traveled to Canton, Ohio, to compete in the Walsh Invitational on Monday and Tuesday.

Els just misses

Her runner-up finish earned Els a spot on the five-player all-tournament team at an event held at the Jefferson Country Club as the Wildcats finished eighth in a field of 14 as a team.

Els, a senior, shot a pair of 74s on Monday and Tuesday for a 148 total NMU totaled 646, 40 shots behind team champioin Indianapolis. Findlay was runner-up with 610, followed by Grand Valley State with 617, Northwood 629, Tiffin 637, Ferris State 638 and Walsh 642.

The Wildcats finished ahead of Gannon, Malone, Ohio Dominican, Lake Superior State, Ashland and Wheeling.

Two Northern golfers tied for 36th place. Freshman Annie Pietila and junior Abigail Boozer each shot 163 as Pietila had rounds of 80 and 83 and Boozer had 84 and 79.

Rounding out NMU contingent was freshman Alyssa Yaggie, tied for 59th with 86-86–172, and sophomore Paxton Johnson, tied for 72nd with 86-94–180.

The Wildcats return to action Sunday when they head to the Glenmoor Country Club in Canton, Ohio, for the two-day Walsh Invitational.
