GLIAC honors Northern Michigan University women golfers Caro Els, Annie Pietila

Caro Els

MARQUETTE — Caro Els gets to finish her senior season in style now that she’s received an invitation to golf in the NCAA Division II Women’s Golf East Regional Championship.

The Northern Michigan University golfer received word on that invite Wednesday, the same day she and freshman teammate Annie Pietila earned All-GLIAC honors.

Els was named to the All-GLIAC First Team after individual finishes of second, sixth, 15th, 20th and 24th in tournaments this spring, shooting a season-best 73 in the second round of the season-opening Saginaw Valley State Spring Invitational held in Georgetown, Kentucky, on March 21.

Els also earned all-tournament honors at the NC4K College Classic held in Blacklick, Ohio, on April 6.

The NCAA East Regional runs Monday through Wednesday at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel, Indiana. Els also took part in the 2019 regional that advanced her to that spring’s NCAA Division II Championships.

Pietila earned All-GLIAC Honorable Mention with her best performance at the GLIAC Championships, where she finished as runner-up, missing the individual title by a single stroke. Her rounds of 72 and 70 in downstate Augusta on April 16-17 for a 142 total is the best 36-hole individual score in NMU women’s golf history, according to an account from NMU Sports Information.
