Carter Mason, Nick Rowley lead Northern Michigan University Wildcats at GLIAC men’s golf finals

AUGUSTA — A pair of juniors tied each other for 20th place to lead Northern Michigan University at the GLIAC Men’s Golf Championship held at Stoatin Brae Golf Club near Battle Creek over the weekend.

Carter Mason, a Negaunee High School graduate, and Nick Rowley each shot 146 to rank in the top 20 as the Wildcats finished eighth. Mason shot rounds of 74 Friday and an even-par 72 Saturday, while Rowley had 73 each day.

Their rounds are tied for fifth best 36-hole individual scores in program history.

NMU totaled 594 in the 10-team field as Grand Valley State won by 20 strokes with 546. Ferris State was runner-up with 566 and Saginaw Valley State third with 572. Following closely was Ashland with 576 and Wayne State with 577. Davenport had 583 for sixth and Wisconsin-Parkside had 589.

Trailing the Wildcats, who five-player total was sixth-best in team history, was Lake Superior State in ninth with 609 and Purdue Northwest 10th with 626.

GVSU’s Nick Krueger was medalist with a 12-under-par 132 on rounds of 65 and 67.

For NMU, three freshman rounded out their scorecard. Walter Ylitalo was 31st with 75 and 74 for 149, while Blake Ramirez tied for 36th with 78-75–153 and Caden Dunn was tied for 41st with 79-77–156.

Northern finished its scheduled events as the roster for the NCAA Division II National Championship participation to be unveiled Monday.
