MARQUETTE — A strong finish to the regular season propelled Northern Michigan University sophomore Andre Ghantous into being named WCHA Forward of the Month for February, the league announced Tuesday.

Ghantous scored 21 points in the Wildcats’ final 13 games, including 16 points during 10 February games on five goals and 11 assists.

While most of the rest of the league has makeup games this week, NMU has completed its 14-league game regular season.

Ghantous led all WCHA players in points and assists for the month, with his points three more than the second most, which happened to be linemate and Wildcats captain Joe Nardi.

Among his goals was a shorthanded one at Bemidji State on Feb. 12 with no other league player having more than one shortie in the span.

Ghantous’ 11 assists were not only the best in the league, but best in NCAA Division I, while his 16 points were second nationally.

He was named WCHA Forward of the Week for a five-point weekend in the mid-February road sweep of Bemidji, which had been ranked No. 17 nationally before that weekend. Among his points were an assist on the overtime game winner scored by Ben Newhouse in a 3-2 victory on Feb. 13.

This is Ghantous’ first monthly honor after two previous WCHA Player of the Week awards.
