Northern Michigan University Wildcats men’s basketball season ends with virus-testing whimper

MARQUETTE — Due to the timing of recent coronavirus testing results, the men’s basketball season at Northern Michigan University had ended.

The Wildcats would’ve been scheduled to host a first-round game on Tuesday due to changes made in the GLIAC Tournament this season. The top four teams get a bye that night, with the Nos. 5 through 8 seeds hosting Nos. 9 through 12 in the first round.

After not playing over the weekend due to the same coronavirus tests, NMU finishes at 8-8 and part of a four-way tie for fifth with Wisconsin-Parkside (9-9), Purdue Northwest (8-8) and Ferris State (8-8).

NMU said that data privacy regulations don’t allow further comments on the situation.

The university made the same statement when it announced last weekend’s games at Purdue Northwest were canceled, however, a Purdue NW statement about those same games said that the games “have been canceled due to Northern Michigan being unavailable to play,” though it made no mention of the coronavirus pandemic.
