MARQUETTE — The Negaunee girls were the only area team to make any move in the second edition of the weekly high school basketball polls released today by the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

The Miners bumped up really only one place, but it was a significant spot, from the top of the others-receiving-votes list into fifth place in Divisions 1-3.

Negaunee won three games in the last week to improve to 7-1, beating Marquette 43-33 last Tuesday, Hancock 31-29 on Wednesday and Houghton 44-41 on Saturday.

That gives the area exactly one team in each of the top-five of the four polls voted on by select members of the UPSSA.

The other three area teams that are ranked held their positions from Week 1.

Baraga (5-2) is still third in the Division 4 girls poll, having beaten L’Anse 40-36 last Tuesday and Bessemer 61-15 on Thursday.

Marquette (5-2) remains third in the Divisions 1-3 boys rankings, splitting a pair of games against two other Divisions 1-3 ranked teams in the last week. The Redmen lost to No. 1 Escanaba 63-57 on Tuesday before defeating No. 5 Kingsford 50-35 on Friday.

And Munising (7-1) stayed in fourth in the Division 4 boys poll, with wins over North Central 69-46 last Tuesday and over Manistique 69-46 on Saturday.

While no area teams are listed in the Associated Press’ weekly state rankings, a number of other U.P. teams are.

For the girls, Sault Ste. Marie is fifth in Division 2, Menominee eighth in Division 3 and Ewen-Trout Creek second and Carney-Nadeau third in Division 4.

Among the boys, Iron Mountain is fourth and Bark River-Harris ninth in Division 3, and E-TC fifth, Dollar Bay eighth and Rudyard 11th in Division 4.

In games involving area teams against U.P. vote-getting teams, tonight the L’Anse girls host Calumet, Marquette boys play at Gladstone, Manistique boys play at Escanaba and Baraga boys play at Chassell.

On Wednesday, the Superior Central girls host C-N.

On Thursday, the Negaunee boys host IM, the SC boys play at BR-H and the L’Anse girls play at Ontonagon.

On Friday, the SC boys host Munising, and on Saturday, the Baraga boys host Jeffers.

In addition, on Monday, the Gwinn boys host Gladstone, the Republic-Michigamme boys play at Chassell, the Marquette girls host Negaunee and the Manistique girls play at St. Ignace.
