Munising advances, Republic-Michigamme falls in MHSAA girls basketball districts

MUNISING — The Munising High School girls basketball team raced to an 18-1 lead after one quarter and never looked back for a 49-25 victory over Big Bay de Noc in the opening game of the MHSAA Division 4 district tournament hosted by the Mustangs.

The Black Bears did stay within 26-12 at halftime, but never made much more inroads than that as Munising continued to hold a 37-23 lead entering the final quarter.

“In the first quarter we came out pretty intense,” MHS coach Matt Mattson said. “We limited them to one shot, got some turnovers and made rebounds.”

He said that freshman Emerson Crisp had nine of her 14 points in the opening period, while junior Jenna Matson had “about six or seven” of her game-high 22 points then.

Junior Mackenzie Richardson added seven points to the winning effort, while Camryn Peterson led Big Bay with nine.

In the only girls district involving area teams that is still using the “traditional” format this spring, Munising stays at home to face Superior Central at 6 p.m. Wednesday. That game is followed by Mid Peninsula vs. Rapid River at 7:30 p.m.

The game was tight in the first quarter with the Jets only ahead 19-17 going into the second quarter.
