Freshman Jenna Maki, junior Hannah DeLoughary lead Ishpeming Hematites to big girls basketball victory over West Iron County, 45-31

IRON RIVER — Freshman Jenna Maki led all scorers with 15 points to lead Ishpeming to a 45-31 road victory at West Iron County in a high school girls basketball game played Monday evening.

Maki made 6 of 7 free throws as junior teammate Hannah DeLoughary added 12 points, all on 3-pointers.

Tori Bociek paced the Wykons with 10 points.

“Whenever you can get a road win you have to feel good. We stepped off the bus ready to go and had a great defensive first quarter,” Ishpeming head coach Ryan Reichel said. “We knew what West Iron is capable of, with how well they played Westwood and Negaunee.”

The Hematites jumped out to a 14-3 lead after one quarter, keeping pace in the second quarter for a 22-11 halftime lead.

At Calumet, the visiting Patriots cut into a 36-20 halftime deficit during the third quarter, but couldn’t stop the Copper Kings’ offense in the fourth quarter.

Calumet led 16-10 after one quarter but only scored six points in the third quarter as Westwood got to within 42-30 by the start of the fourth. Then the Kings broke loose for 22 points in the final eight minutes to hold off any Patriot charge.

Natalie Prophet and Ellie Miller each scored 15 points for Westwood, including a pair of 3-pointers by Prophet and 3-for-3 free-throw shooting for Miller.

Engadine 51, Munising 36

At Munising, the Mustangs played an even game in the second half after putting themselves in a hole during the opening half.

“Engadine came out ready to play, and Munising definitely did not,” MHS head coach Matt Mattson said. “I’ll take the blame for that. We’ll be ready from the get-go in our next game.

“We have a younger team this year and it’s going to take a little bit of time for us.”

The Eagles jumped out to leads of 16-7 after one quarter and 31-17 at halftime before outscoring Munising by a narrow 20-19 margin in the second half.

Mustangs regular top scorer Jenna Matson got in early foul trouble and finished with eight points. Freshman teammate Emerson Crisp finished with nine, while sophomore teammate Monique Brisson had eight.
