Natalie Prophet scores early as Westwood girls basketball team races to 51-32 win at Gwinn

GWINN — Natalie Prophet scored nine of her game-high 19 points in the first quarter as Westwood raced past Gwinn 51-32 in a high school girls basketball game played Thursday.

Prophet went 4 of 4 at the free throw line.

Ellie Miller and Megan Marta added 11 points apiece for the Patriots, who jumped out to a 17-7 lead after one quarter, extending it to 34-17 by halftime.

Tianna Taylor paced the Modeltowners with 18 points as Halle Beauchamp had seven.

Baraga 61, Bessemer 15

At Baraga, this game wasn’t as close as the score indicates, if that’s possible, since the Vikings raced to a 29-0 lead after one quarter, coasting to a 45-6 advantage by halftime.

Rylie Koskinen led Baraga with 14 points as teammate Reide Osterman had 12. Both sank a pair of 3-pointers as Koskinen also had three assists and four steals, while Osterman swiped her way to seven steals.

The Vikings’ Corina Jahfetson added nine points and a team-high six assists while also making three steals.

“We got out in transition early and got a decent lead,” Baraga head coach Tom Goodreau said. “We were able to use our whole bench and get everyone a good amount of playing time.”

Ewen-Trout Creek 71, Republic-Michigamme 24

At Republic, the visiting Panthers raced to a 41-9 halftime lead, though the Hawks played E-TC even in the fourth quarter at 8-8.

Leah McCracken paced R-M with 13 points, while Kate Borseth led the Panthers with 20.
