LANSING — The Michigan High School Athletic Association confirmed Thursday that member schools may begin full practice activities in those sports on Monday with precautions outlined by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, which includes social distancing, masks and/or testing.

Games in basketball and hockey can start right away on Monday, while wrestling and cheer can begin competition again next Friday.

Without full-contact practices being OK’d before Thursday, though, it’s unclear when teams in those sports will actually start their seasons.

Contact sports had been barred unless all participants, teams and venues comply with an enhanced virus testing regimen, as conducted by pro and college leagues, or a pilot testing program, which enabled the recent completion of fall high school tournaments that had been suspended.

Winter high school sports — basketball, hockey, wrestling and competitive cheer — along with youth soccer and other leagues have effectively been restricted to non-contact practice and training only with that beginning Jan. 16.

Specific to each sport, the MHSAA issued these guidelines and schedules:

• In basketball and hockey, all participants — defined as athletes, coaches and other team personnel active in practice or competition — must wear face coverings at all times, including games, practices and non-game activities. Approved negative tests may allow participants to remove masks while actively participating.

• In wrestling, competitors must undergo same-day testing before meets, but a negative test allows wrestlers to compete without face coverings.

• In competitive cheer, teams may compete without testing or face coverings, but must wear masks at all times outside of active competition or stunting-tumbling practice.

Tournament timelines: girls basketball districts are March 22-26, regionals March 29-31, quarterfinals April 5, semifinals April 7 and state finals April 9. Boys basketball tourneys are one day later than girls.

Hockey: regionals March 15-20, quarterfinals March 23, semifinals March 25-26 and state finals March 27.

Wrestling: districts March 15-20, regionals March 22-28, teams state finals March 30, individual state finals April 2-3

Cheer: districts March 15-20, regionals March 22-24, state finals March 26-27
