Every league team makes this year’s GLIAC basketball tourneys

BAY CITY — The most noticeable change is that all 12 men’s and women’s basketball schools qualify for this winter’s Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournaments, the league announced on Wednesday.

In the past, only the top eight teams qualified, with the top four hosting the next four in the opening quarterfinal round before advancing to play the semifinals and finals at the site of the highest surviving seed.

For 2021 in both men’s and women’s tourneys, the bottom four teams get to continue playing, going on the road to play at the Nos. 5 through 8 seeds in the opening round on Tuesday, March 2. Meanwhile, the top four seeds get a bye.

Also new this year, the final rounds of the tourneys won’t be played at the No. 1 seed but instead have already been scheduled for the Hammond and Westville campuses at Purdue Northwest University in northern Indiana.

With Westville hosting the women and Hammond the men, four quarterfinal games in each tournament will be played on Thursday, March 4. Semifinals are set for Friday, March 5, and championships on Sunday, March 7.

For games on March 2 and 4, the highest-seeded team will play the lowest-seeded team, second-highest vs. second-lowest, and on down the line.

In addition, due to coronavirus pandemic concerns, no fans will be allowed to attend these championships, nor ones the GLIAC is also hosting in swimming and diving or in track and field.
