Northern Michigan University cross-country skiers post individual wins at Michigan Tech Holiday meet

MARQUETTE — Northern Michigan University posted several victories and a number of other high finishes at the Michigan Tech CXC Cup Holiday Championships held at the Michigan Tech Trails near Houghton over the weekend.

There were nine categories of racing, with the Wildcats entered in men’s and women’s divisions of the category for Senior, Under-20 and Under-18 racers.

Other categories included youth, older adults and adaptive sit skiers.

NMU senior Tobias Moosmann of Austria swept to victory in the Saturday men’s Senior Division sprint racing in both classic and freestyle forms that also led to the combined victory.

Moosman clocked 3 minutes, 4.24 seconds in the classic and 2:35.93 in freestyle for a combined 5:40.17 time, more than 2 1/2 seconds ahead of runner-up and graduate student teammate Kjetil Baanerud. Baanerud, from the European country of Norway, clocked 3:05.04 in classic and 2:37.73 in freestyle for a 5:42.77 total.

And a third NMU skier, sophomore Kristoffer Karsrud also of Norway, was fourth overall, with times of 3:07.46, 2:40.27 and 5:47.73.

In the men’s under-20, Northern sophomore Matt Bourne of Minnesota finished second in each discipline also for second overall as he clocked 3:12.42 in classic, 2:48.94 in freestyle for a 6:01.36 total.

NMU freshman teammate Cooper Lennox, also from Minnesota, won the freestyle in 2:47.24 and was fourth in classic in 3:19.96 for a third-place total of 6:07.20.

In Saturday’s sprints for women, NMU sophomore Malin Boerjesjoe of Sweden pulled off the overall win in the Senior division. Her overall time of 6:38.91 was more than four seconds ahead of the field as she won the classic in 3:35.63 and was second in freestyle in 3:03.28. While she lost the freestyle title by just about a half-second, she had a nearly five-second bulge in classic for a relatively easy overall win.

NMU sophomore Gretchen Haggenmiller of Minnesota was fourth in U-20 with 7:16.65, placing second in classic in 3:53.83 and fourth in freestyle in 3:22.82.

Then on Sunday in the freestyle individual start, Baanerud had the men’s top finish, coming in second in the Senior Division. He clocked 40:34.3, less than 15 seconds behind winner Brian Gregg of Lopper High Performance. Moosmann was fifth in 41:18.7 and Karsrud 10th in 43:31.1.

In men’s U-20, Lennox was third in 43:25.3, about 90 seconds behind winner Colin Freed of Loppet and around 23 1/2 seconds back of runner-up Henry Snider of MTU. Bourne was seventh in 44:36.5.

For the same racing for the women on Sunday, Boerjesjoe was second in 31:29.6, about 59 seconds behind winner Caitlin Gregg of Loppet. Haggenmiller was 10th in U-20 in 37:02.5.

NMU’s next meet on its schedule at www.nmuwildcats.com is the Central Collegiate Ski Association Qualifier and CXC Cup at the American Birkbeiner held in Cable, Wisconsin, on Jan. 16-17.
