Negaunee, Marquette breeze to high school girls tennis victories on Monday

IRON RIVER — The road show for the Negaunee High School girls tennis is proving to be every bit as good as the home version should be after the Miners swept their second straight road match 8-0 at West Iron County on Monday.

Negaunee (2-0) won every match in straight sets, not losing more than three games in a set or five in a match all day. In fact, the Miners dropped just 22 games in eight matches as they begin what their schedule shows are three dual meets and a tournament over four consecutive days this week.

NHS head coach Kyle Saari singled out several players for their performances, including No. 3 singles player Lexi Mason for a 6-1, 6-0 win, No. 4 singles player Annika Tervo for a 6-2, 6-0 victory, and the No. 1 doubles tandem of Kaelyn Lammi and Morgan Carlson for a 6-2, 6-1 triumph.

“The girls played very well after a long trip,” Saari said in an email. “Lexi and Annika really moved the ball around in singles, and Katelyn and Morgan continue to build upon their games at (No.) 1 doubles.

“It’s a busy week ahead and it was important to start like this.”

Like Mason, one doubles pairing also lost just one game as No. 4 Daylyn Drew and Faith Mager won 6-0, 6-1.

Negaunee hosts Ishpeming at 1 p.m. at its high school courts before traveling to Gladstone for a match at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Marquette 6, Kingsford 2

At Marquette, the Redettes swept the singles flights, all in straight sets, to power their way past visiting Kingsford on Monday.

MSHS lost just 13 games totals in the four singles matches as No. 1 Campbell Kallio scored a 6-1, 6-1 victory, No. 2 Haddie Ketzenberger earned a 6-2, 6-1 win, No. 3 Ruth Hummell got a 6-1, 6-3 victory and No. 4 Julianna Golisek earned a 6-3, 6-1 win.

Doubles overall proved to be much more even as the schools split those matches. And while every match went the minimum two sets, three of the Redettes’ four set wins were by 7-5 scores.

“The singles girls were great today,” Marquette head coach Derek Sandstrom said via email. “I was also happy with the way Eliina (Brazeau) and Kaia (Miller) played at (No. 3 doubles). They were in a tough second set, but pulled out the last three games to close the match.”

Brazeau and Miller slid past Brooke Bittinger and Macy Holmes 7-5, 7-5, while Marquette’s No. 4 tandem of Nishta Gautam and Sam Heikkila won 7-5, 6-0.
