Marquette Redettes battle to high school girls tennis tie with Escanaba

MARQUETTE — Marquette and Escanaba showed how evenly matched they are while playing to a 4-4 high school girls tennis tie at the Redettes’ courts on Thursday.

Marquette’s Campbell Kallio and Julianna Golisek picked up wins at Nos. 1 and 3 singles, respectively, with Golisek taking a three-set thriller. However, Esky’s Sophia Derkos and Amanda Beem came out on top at Nos. 2 and 4 singles, respectively. Derkos defeated Ruth Hummell in a tight three-set flight.

The teams also split in doubles with the Redettes’ Zoey Brian and Bre Sandstrom getting a hard-fought victory at No. 1.

“We had three girls play up (higher-seeded) in the lineup today, and I think Ruth, Lexi (Hammerstrom) and Julianna all responded well and got better,” Marquette head coach Derek Sandstrom said. “Julianna probably had the match of the day. (Assistant coach) Charlie (Drury) and I are proud of her.

“Campbell just keeps rolling at (No.) 1 singles as well. Her game and confidence grow with every match at 1. (Nos.) 1 and 3 doubles pulled out close matches as well. Zoey and Bre played their best tennis of the year in their third set.”
