MARQUETTE — Eleven members of the Nordic ski teams at Northern Michigan University — six women and five men — earned All-Academic honors from the U.S. Collegiate Ski Coaches Association.

Skiers receiving this recognition attained a cumulative 3.5 grade-point average while also participating in an NCAA regional.

On the Wildcats women’s team, honorees were sophomores Savanna Fassio of Park City, Utah, Katerina Hyncicova of Liberc, Czech Republic, and Nadine Matter of Engelberg, Switzerland; and freshmen Malin Boerjesjoe of Umeaa, Sweden, Hilde Eide of Beitostoelen, Norway, and Molly Miller of Kimberley, British Columbia.

For the NMU men, earning this award were senior Mathias Aas-Rolid of Redalen, Norway; juniors Kjetil Baanerud of Oslo, Norway, and Xavier Mansfield of Minneapolis; and freshmen Matt Bourne of Lake Elmo, Minnesota, and Maurus Grond of Davos Monstein, Switzerland.

Matter, Boerjesjoe, Miller, Aas-Rolid and Baanerud competed at the national NCAA Ski Championships in Bozeman, Montana, on March 12.

Miller clocked 14:34.3 for 15th in the women’s 5K freestyle to also become an All-American.

In addition, Northern’s Daniel Streinz was 29th in the men’s 10K in 26:09.1, while in the women’s 5K, Boerjesjoe was 33rd in 15:28.1 and Matter 36th in 15:33.6.

The second day of racing on March 14 was canceled due to coronavirus concerns.

There was another event scheduled after the NCAAs that was also canceled — the U.S. Distance National Championships in Kelowna, British Columbia, from March 26-April 2.
