MARQUETTE — The Northern Michigan University swimming and diving teams’ season came to a sudden end on the morning of March 12 when the NCAA called off all postseason championship events.

It came during the third day of the five-day national finals meet held in Geneva, Ohio, at the Spire Institute.

The Wildcats sent 19 swimmers and divers to the NCAA Division II Championships, including 12 who were to compete in individual events.

The NMU men’s and women’s teams found success through that Thursday morning that competition was held. That included setting a school record in the men’s 400-yard medley relay and earning an Honorary All-American award for freshman Micah Currie in one-meter diving.

Currie finished 16th in his diving event for that honor.

Including the men’s 400 medley, three NMU relays also earned their members Honorary All-American status, too.

The women’s 200 freestyle relay was 15th in 1:35.80 with freshmen Michaela Nelson, Meritxell Font Cantarero and Julianna Engesser, along with junior Margaret Vaitkus.

The same honor went to the men’s 200 free relay as it was 16th in 1:21.44 with junior Amir Saman Khajegi, freshmen Roberto Camera and Ivan Amillo Escobedo and senior Lajos Budai.

And the best finish was turned in by Northern’s record-setting 400 medley relay, which was 13th in 3:15.34. Those members included Budai, Camera, sophomore Felipe Lemos and Amillo Escobedo.

Also swimming preliminary rounds before finals that were canceled were Nelson in the women’s 100 butterfly, junior Gabriella Spajic in the women’s 400 individual medley, Budai and Amillo Escobedo in the men’s 200 free and the quartet of freshman Jenna Joerger, sophomore Briana Arnold, Font Cantarero and Vaitkus in the women’s 400 medley relay.
