Elliott, a 5-foot-10 senior wing, also had the Pioneers primed to make another run at the Division 2 state title in 2020. They were 23-0 heading into the regional final round when the season was halted because of the coronavirus.

In short, she’s had a great prep basketball career at Detroit Edison.

Last month, she was named Miss Basketball in the state of Michigan, following in the footsteps of her teammate Rickea Jackson, who won the award in 2019 before departing to play at Mississippi State.

Now, Elliott can add Division 2 Associated Press Player of the Year to her ever-improving resume after she was voted to the honor by a group of Michigan sports writers.

Four Upper Peninsula girls also made the Division 2 teams, led by Menominee junior Emma Anderson on the First Team.

Escanaba junior Nicole Kamin earned a berth on the Second Team, while Gladstone’s Megan Crow and Sault Ste. Marie’s Julia Beaumont won honorable mention.

For the season, Elliott averaged 22.8 points per game. She is committed to play basketball at Clemson starting this fall.

Elliott has been one of the most sought-after talents in the state of Michigan. She was recruited by big-time programs including Maryland, Minnesota, North Carolina, Pittsburgh and Marquette.

Elliott is joined on the Division 2 All-State first team by junior teammate Damiya Hagemann, who averaged 12.1 points and 7.3 assists. She is being recruited by Ohio State, Michigan and DePaul, among others, and is one to watch next year.

In addition to Menominee’s Anderson, joining them on this year’s first team are Kadyn Blanchard from Freeland; Sara Miller from Birch Run; Kenzie Lewis from Williamston; Hadley Miller from Three Rivers; AJ Ediger from Hamilton; Abbey Kimball from Grand Rapids West Catholic; Molly Anderson from Cadillac and Maddie Voelker from Goodrich.

Freeland coach Matt Hirschenberger took Coach of the Year honors after leading the Falcons to a record of 20-4 and to a Tri-Valley East Conference title and a district crown.
