West Iron County knocks off Gwinn, Munising zooms past Manistique in boys basketball

GWINN — Gwinn held serve with West Iron County for three quarters before the Wykons erupted for a 22-8 advantage in the final quarter of a 69-55 boys basketball victory on Friday night.

The teams were tied 12-12 after one quarter as the Modeltowners took a modest 28-26 halftime before it was retied 47-47 entering the final period.

“We were down 12-2 in the first quarter before we really came back to tie it,” GHS coach Jim Finkbeiner said. “In the fourth quarter, they hit a couple baskets right away and we couldn’t match it. Then we made a couple turnovers they turned into quick points and after that we had to start taking some chances.”

James Harnick led Gwinn with 20 points while David Duvall had 18, each making three 3-pointers. Mastin Love added eight points to the effort.

WIC’s Justin Nelson led all scorers with 21 points, while Peyton Williams added 15, Dolan Dobson 14 and Mason Thomson 11.

The Modeltowners won the JV game 66-27.

Munising 73, Manistique 40

At Munising, the Mustangs put this game away in the first half, taking leads of 15-2 and 35-8 at the end of each of the first two quarters.

Senior Austin Killips scored 24 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead four Munising players scoring in double figures. Fellow senior Josh Huotari added 13 points with a pair of triples, while freshman Kane Nebel and senior Jesse Duran added 12 apiece. Nebel nailed three treys himself as the Mustangs made 11 as a team.

Schyler Andersen paced the Emeralds with 16 points, making two of his team’s seven 3s. Sammy Warren added nine points.
