Munising’s Megan Matson, Taylin Behning, Superior Central’s Emma Rutter earn Skyline Central Conference girls basketball awards

MUNISING — Munising and Superior Central high schools combined to earn five girls basketball honors when the Skyline Central Conference announced its season awards earlier this week.

The top honor went to Mustangs senior Megan Matson, who was named to the league’s First Team.

Senior teammate Taylin Behning, however, was a two-time award recipient, earning a berth on the league’s All-Defensive Team while also earning the SCC Individual Sportsmanship Award.

Sophomore Emma Rutter claimed both of the Cougars’ awards, earning a spot on the All-Defensive Team and honorable mention for the all-league team.

North Dickinson earned multiple special awards, being named Small Schools’ varsity champion as senior Briana Smith earned Player of the Year and Kirk Mattson was named Coach of the Year.

Other top honors went to Bark River-Harris as Large Schools varsity champion, senior Mercedes Simmons of Forest Park as Defensive Player of the Year, Stephenson as Team Sportsmanship Award winner and Stephenson’s Paige Cappaert as Free Throw Award winner for her 78.8 percent success at the line.

On the JV level, Norway was named Large Schools champ and Carney-Nadeau the Small Schools winner.
