Ishpeming boys basketball team sizzles at free-throw line in 64-49 victory over West Iron County

ISHPEMING — Ishpeming made just shy of 90 percent of its free throws to power its way to a 64-49 boys basketball victory over visiting West Iron County on Tuesday.

The Hematites made 9 of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter and 17 of 19 (89.5 percent) for the game as they broke open a game that they led just 41-36 entering the final period.

Breck Bell and Griffin Argall each scored 17 points to lead Ishpeming as Bell was 4 of 4 at the free-throw line while Argall sank four 3-pointers.

The Hematites trailed 15-11 after one quarter before a second-quarter spurt put them ahead 31-23 at halftime.

Jake Kugler and Jayce Kipling, who went 6 of 6 at the line, each added nine points to the winning cause.

Nathan Thompson paced the Wykons with 16 points as they made 17 of 25 from the line (68 percent).

Ishpeming (8-11) completes its regular season with a makeup game at Manistique on Thursday.

Dollar Bay 84, Republic-Michigamme 33

At Republic, the visiting Blue Bolts raced to leads of 32-14 and 53-20 at the end of the first two quarters.

Three Blue Bolts scored in double figures, led by Ashton Janke, who had 35 points.

Gabe Dupont was the Hawks’ offensive leader with 10 points.

The Blue Bolts put the game away in the third quarter as they held a 68-25 advantage going into the fourth.

R-M finished its regular season at 3-17, winning three of its last five games, and plays at North Central in an MHSAA Division 4 district tournament matchup on Monday.

Norway 72, Munising 56

At Munising, senior center Kody Hendricks and junior guard Logan Parolini combined for 58 points in the Knights’ win.

Hendricks scored a game-high 34 points, making 10 of 11 from the free throw line. Parolini had five 3-pointers in his 24-point effort.

Josh Huotari led the Mustangs with 30 points in a game of former Mid-Peninsula Conference foes who now both play in the Skyline Central. Kane Nebel chipped in 11 points for Munising, which is ranked No. 5 in the Upper Peninsula Divisions 1-3 poll.

“We had a great shooting night and Kody (Hendricks) had an excellent game for us inside,” Norway head coach Jeff Gallino said. “Jeff VanHolla did a great job defensively, and we made our free throws down the stretch to seal the win.”

Munising (17-2) closes out its regular season on Friday night when the Mustangs host Manistique in a makeup from last Friday.
