Lajos Budai

MARQUETTE — Northern Michigan University will send 19 of its men’s and women’s swimmers and divers to the NCAA Division II National Championship meet next week.

The meet is set for Geneva, Ohio, from March 10-14 and athletes qualified through times and points established at meets during the season.

Eight Wildcats have qualified in individual swimming events with another seven to compete in relays. And four will be divers.

Those divers are Amanda Baird, Jamie Kimble, Micah Currie and Ryan Leach, who will compete in a prequalifying round looking for a spot in the championship part of the meet.

Senior women’s swimmer Rachel Helm, who didn’t qualify this year, was a national champion in two women’s backstroke events in her freshman and sophomore years.

For the NMU men’s swimmers this year, four swimmers will be in individual events and four more only in relays.

Senior Lajos Budai made it in three events, the 100-yard freestyle, 200 free and 100 backstroke as he won GLIAC meet titles in the 100 free and 100 back.

Junior Ondrej Zach qualified in the 1,000 and 1,650 free after he was runner-up twice at the league meet.

Freshman Ivan Amillo-Escobedo made it to nationals in the 100 and 200 free, while fellow freshman Roberto Camera qualified in the 100 backstroke.

The relay qualifiers are senior Jonas Reinhold and sophomore Jon Busse in the 800 free relay, junior Amir Saman-Khajegi in the 200 free relay and sophomore Felipe Lemos in the 400 medley relay.

For the Northern women swimmers, four also qualified in individual events with three more in relays.

Junior Gabriella Spajic will swim the 1,000 and 1,650 free at nationals after placing second in the 1,000 and third in the 1,650 at the GLIAC meet.

Three freshmen qualified for one event each. Meritxell Font-Cantarero made it in the 200 butterfly after winning the GLIACs in it, Michaela Nelson qualified in the 100 free after also winning that GLIAC event, and Jenna Joerger made it in the 100 backstroke after winning the “B” final heat at GLIACs.

The relay qualifiers are junior Margaret Vaitkus and freshman Julianna Engesser in the 200 free relay and sophomore Briana Arnold in the 400 medley relay.
