MARQUETTE — Jessica Schultz couldn’t be denied a second straight GLIAC weekly basketball honor after she led the Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team to a home sweep over the weekend.

Schultz was named GLIAC Women’s North Player of the Week on Monday after she put up 59 points, 16 rebounds and six blocked shots in the Wildcats’ sweep of Wisconsin-Parkside on Thursday and Purdue Northwest on Saturday at the Berry Events Center.

She warmed up with 23 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots in NMU’s 60-55 victory over Parkside, making 10 of 15 shots from the field and 3 of 4 at the free-throw line.

Then she hit a career high 36 points in Northern’s even closer 57-53 win over Purdue NW, sinking 17 of 22 shots and both her free-throw attempts, adding another eight rebounds and two blocks. In addition, she had two assists in each game.

Schultz’s 77.3 percentage from the field in Saturday’s contest was her best of the season when attempting at least five shots.

She has now posted at least 20 points in each of her last four games and boasts 1,161 career points to rank 20th in NMU history.

The modest two-win streak is also part of five wins in the last seven Wildcats’ games, lifting them to 12-11 overall, 9-6 in the GLIAC and 8-2 at home.

Northern is in third place in the GLIAC North Division, but only a game behind coleaders Ferris State and Parkside. Overall, NMU is fifth in the GLIAC with eight teams making the postseason tournament and the top four earning a home quarterfinal game.

NMU and other GLIAC teams have five games left in the regular season. For the Wildcats, they travel to Lake Superior State at 5:30 p.m. Thursday before going to North leader Ferris at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Northern’s final three games are at home against Grand Valley State on Feb. 20, Davenport on Feb. 22 and Upper Peninsula rival Michigan Tech on Feb. 27.
