Northern Michigan University skiers sweep to Central Collegiate Ski Association Championships victories in Houghton

HOUGHTON — Northern Michigan University posted a good ol’-fashioned sweep at Central Collegiate Ski Association Championships held in Houghton over the weekend.

The Wildcats’ men and women each swept to their respective team titles, powered by individual victories in all four races held Saturday and Sunday on the Michigan Tech Trails.

On Saturday, NMU’s Mathias Aas-Rolid captured gold in the men’s 10-kilometer freestyle in 25 minutes, 31.5 seconds, followed closely by teammate Kjetil Banerud in second in 25:44.7. Northern’s Xavier Mansfield was fourth in 26:10.6, Daniel Streinz sixth in 26:21.0, Maurus Grond seventh in 26:22.5, and Tobias Moosmann ninth in 26:48.9. Matthew Bourne came in 33rd in 29:12.4.

The Wildcats swept the women’s podium with their 1-2-3 finish in the 5K freestyle as Nadine Matter won in 15:09.4, Malin Boerjesjoe was runner-up in 15:13.0 and Molly Miller third in 15:13.7. In addition, teammate Hilde Eide was sixth in 15:24.8, Savanna Fassio seventh in 15:27.2, Katerina Hyncicova ninth in 15:39.5 and Pauline Forren 13th in 16:14.7.

Things went much the same way on Sunday.

Aas-Rolid also won the men’s 20K classic in 1:00:47.7 as Streinz was fourth in 1:01:58.4 and Banerud fifth in 1:02:18.2. In addition, Grond was seventh in 1:02:28.8 while Mansfield was 10th in 1:02:46.7. Bourne was 14th in 1:03:28.7 and Moosmann 17th in 1:04:47.5.

For the women in the 15K classic, Boerjesjoe won in 51:29.2, while Miller was third in 51:37.6. Matter came in fifth in 52:24.3, Eide seventh in 53:07.8, Hyncicova eighth in 53:37.4, Fassio 10th in 54:25.3 and Forren 12th in 56:30.4.

The Wildcats return home this weekend when they host for NCAA Central Regional Championships at the Al Quaal Recreation Area in Ishpeming. The two-day meet gets underway with the 5K and 10K individual freestyle on Saturday, continuing with the 15K and 20K mass start classic on Sunday.
