Marquette Redmen’s Joe Lagrou, Wyatt Kuhlman advance to Division 2 individual wrestling regionals

GAYLORD — A pair of Marquette wrestlers finished in the top four to advance to the regionals following the Redmen’s participation at the MHSAA Division 2 wrestling individual district tournament held in Gaylord on Saturday.

Senior Joe Lagrou and sophomore Wyatt Kuhlman each placed third in their weight classes among 14 wrestlers MSHS entered.

Lagrou and Kuhlman return to Gaylord Saturday for a regional including the top wrestlers from the Fenton district. Top-four finishers advance to the state finals at Ford Field in Detroit on March 6-7.

Lagrou, who wrestles at 112 pounds, defeated Gabe Thompson of Gaylord 9-5 in the third-place match on Saturday. After a first-round bye, he compiled a 3-1 record for the day.

Lagrou opened with a pin of Tyler Beair of Petoskey at 3:55, then was pinned by Cael Weinsweig of DeWitt at 2:40 in the semifinals to fall into the consolation bracket.

He then defeated Trenton Idalski of Clio 9-3 to advance to the third-place match.

Kuhlman, a 140-pound division wrestler, slid past Diego Babb of DeWitt 6-3 in his third-place match to also culminate a 3-1 day.

After an opening-round bye, he won a sudden-victory 10-8 decision over Babb, then was pinned by Rippin Vining of Petoskey at 2:27. He came back for a 3-1 win over Caleb Gosselin of Bay City Western to qualify for the third-place match.

The Redmen’s closest near-miss for another regional qualifier was sophomore Desmond Mullen, who placed sixth at 152 with a 2-2 record.

After a bye, he edged Kristian Keyes of Owosso 2-0, lost to Brayden Gautreau of Gaylord 16-5, defeated Kaden Yocum of Gaylord 6-2 and lost to Kaeden Southworth of DeWitt 7-5.

Also winning a contested match at the districts was senior Payton Holmstrom at 112, junior Shawn Mahan at 189, sophomore Alex Schlemm at 215 and Chris Ricker at 285.

The balance of MSHS participants were freshman Lars Anderson at 103, freshman Luke Mead at 135, senior Griffin Moore at 145, Liam Nyfeler at 160, sophomore Jacob Schlemm at 160, sophomore Gideon Bell at 171 and senior Brendon Bell-Bouschor at 215.
