Ishpeming boys basketball team holds off Gwinn comeback attempt

ISHPEMING — The Ishpeming High School varsity boys basketball team earned a sweep of Gwinn on Wednesday night, picking up a 70-63 win over the Modeltowners at the IHS gym.

The Hematites improved to 7-10 with three games remaining on their regular season schedule. Gwinn suffered its fifth straight loss, falling to 3-15.

Wednesday’s contest was just as tight as the first, a 51-50 Ishpeming win on Dec. 18.

This time, the Hematites led 12-7 after one quarter before going up 33-18 at halftime.

The Modeltowners cut their deficit to 11 points after three quarters and outscored Ishpeming 25-21 in the fourth, but it wasn’t quite enough to complete the comeback.

Jacob Kugler led the Ishpeming offense with 23 points while Griffin Argall added 18 and Breck Bell 11. Kugler also picked up 18 rebounds.

Gwinn was led by James Harnick with 22 points while Tristan Jansci added nine and Caleb Anderson eight.

The Hematites made 23 on 38 free throw, while was good on 13 of 20.

On Friday, Ishpeming hosts Kingsford (4-14), while Gwinn hosts Superior Central (3-14).
